Express Grill
About This Spot
Express Grill feels like a steadfast fixture on Chicago’s vibrant west side—a casual local eatery where the pace is unhurried but the energy hums through each order shouted to the grill. Nestled just south of the famed Maxwell Street market area, this spot embodies a sense of tradition wrapped in the daily rhythms of a neighborhood that treasures its hot dogs, sausages, and all things grilled. The narrow counter and open kitchen invite you in as much for the familiar smells of sizzling meat and charred onions as for the simple joy of grabbing a meal to go or sitting just long enough to soak it all in.
Arriving here, you’ll notice a steady flow of regulars and newcomers who share a quiet anticipation for the hearty, no-frills fare lined up with care behind the counter. There’s a warmth in the straightforward hospitality — friendly voices double-check your order, ensuring exactly the right mix of mustard, grilled onions, or those fiery hot peppers that give the dishes true character. The atmosphere pulses with the kind of comfort found only in places where food is made with both attention and affection, and where everyone knows that sometimes, the best meals come wrapped in a steamed bun and eaten without hurry.
At Express Grill, the focus is on robust flavors that honor Chicago’s storied culinary roots — from the classic Polish sausage split and grilled to coax each savory note, to the humble pork chop sandwich, whose bone-in presence recalls a bygone era of neighborhood cookouts. The addition of crispy fries and the occasional homemade Italian ice balances the savory with a sweet, refreshing contrast, making your visit a small but complete experience. It’s this blend of straightforward, satisfying food and a genuine connection to place that turns a quick bite into a memorable moment.
While the spot welcomes a steady crowd throughout the day, there’s a particular rhythm to the service — fast, efficient, and attuned to your cravings, especially when the grill’s calls mix with the chatter of those savoring a pause in a busy city. Even when the seating is limited and the line spills onto the sidewalk, there’s an unspoken camaraderie in sharing this food and space, a nod to Chicago’s rich tapestry of flavors and stories.

BEST OF BEST polish sausage in CHICAGO land. Highly recommend this place.

This is the place to stop when you are craving a traditional Polish Sausage! The grilled onions are amazing and come with fries. Ironically Jim's Original is more well known for its sausage but the locals prefer Express Grill. What's really awesome is that Express grill is only 50 feet south of jim's so you can/should try both that's what l did. Express Grill sausages are a little bigger and meatier (less saltier too) and the fries are less seasoned. It's Great late night drunk food at a great price. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Chicago. stand up tables limited parking. 100% Recommend!

I have been coming here for almost 3 decades when I'm visiting the area. The best part here is they can split and grill your Polish Sausage which brings out the flavor from the center of the sausage. They also have an option to add their own homemade spicy mustard. Highly recommend it. They listen carefully to your specific instructions and they are very quick here. There is two places that compete on this street a few steps away from each other. Make sure you go to the one that says "Express Grill", the polish sausage is better in my opinion.

I always get the polish sausage, deep fried with mustard and onions grilled. The service is fast so be ready to order when it's your turn. I just found out they're no longer open 24 hours, now closing around 1-2am. It's usually crowded at any time. Outdoor waiting in any weather.

The polish sausage was absolutely delicious! So were the fries! The sausage was very flavorful and warm and I would definitely recommend getting the grilled onions and mustard with it. Beware the hot peppers because they are quite hot. The sausages also came with fries already which was great since they are crispy on the outside, warm, and not dry. The guy was very nice and made sure to confirm which toppings we wanted and that we got the orders that we each wanted. Our orders came out very quick too! It was unfortunate that so many people were lined up at the other stand when there was no line at this one and the food is so good! The guys in the kitchen were just waiting for people to come by and instantly went to work once we ordered! Overall great experience!
